Teen Rec Night: I Am Because We Are is Philadelphia Youth Basketball’s basketball-centered mentorship program for teens ages 13–19. Built around the power of basketball and a safe, welcoming space outside of home and school, Teen Rec Night gives young people a place to spend their evenings with caring mentors, positive peers, and opportunities to grow.
Rooted in the African philosophy of ubuntu, “I am because we are,” Teen Rec Night helps teens build community, strengthen their confidence, explore their interests, and recognize the value they bring to the people around them.
Basketball may bring teens together. Mentorship, leadership, and community help them grow beyond the game and for the rest of their lives!

Every Teen Rec Night Session Includes:
Open Gym, Basketball & Recreations
Teens have space to play, move, compete, and connect through basketball and other recreational activities.
Career Readiness & Workforce Exploration
Teens are introduced to career pathways, workplace skills, and future opportunities that help them imagine what comes next.
Social-Emotional Learning & Life Skills
Teen Rec Night helps young people practice communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, accountability, and resilience.
Teen-Centered Workshops
Workshops are shaped by teen interests and may include financial literacy, entrepreneurship, STEM, esports, music, media, digital skills, and more.
Safe, Supportive Environment
Teens have a welcoming place to spend time with friends, meet positive peers, and connect with adults who care.
