PYB will be employing for its second summer a cadre of college student interns. Our corporate-based interns will work out of our headquarters at Ballard Spahr, shouldering real responsibility with various projects related to the building of our organization. Our camp-based interns will serve as coaches and mentors at our summer camps which are held on college campuses across the city. All of our interns will participate in an array of interactive learning seminars related to topics including non-profit leadership, movement building, the role of athletes in making social change, and much more.
We invest time, money, and substantive responsibilities in our interns for many reasons. Most importantly, startup enterprises are hard work and require an abundance of energy, stamina, idealism, and optimism. They also involve creativity, resilience, and passion. We have found these attributes in many of our college interns, along with a willingness to “grind” for modest wages, quality mentorship, stretch assignments, and an occasional bite to eat on us.
Perhaps less obvious is our fundamental belief in the importance of building the capacity of emerging leaders in the basketball, coaching, youth development, and social impact communities. Community empowerment is at the core of our mission, and cultivating leadership among the up and comers is a requisite for doing so.
This summer our selection process will place an even greater priority on hiring interns who meet the following criteria:
- have a demonstrated commitment to the positive development of young people;
- have a genuine career interest in the fields of non-profit leadership, sports-based youth development, or basketball coaching;
- have a track record for hard work, reliability, and self-motivation; and
- have an authentic connection to our mission and the communities in which we work.
Lastly, please note that our selection process is increasingly competitive. Applicants should put their very best foot forward in submitting application materials, preparing for and participating in interviews, and following up with a degree of professionalism and desire.
Should you or anyone you know have a serious interest in PYB and its internship program, please know that the application window will close in the next two weeks.
