X’s and O’s from Kenny Holdsman – February February 28, 2017

PYB will be employing for its second summer a cadre of college student interns.  Our corporate-based interns will work out of our headquarters at Ballard Spahr, shouldering real responsibility with various projects related to the building of our organization.  Our camp-based interns will serve as coaches and mentors at our summer camps which are held on college campuses across the city.  All of our interns will participate in an array of interactive learning seminars related to topics including non-profit leadership,…

X’s and O’s from Kenny Holdsman – January January 30, 2017

Philadelphia Youth Basketball from its inception has been focused on the empowerment of young people as students, athletes, and positive leaders.  While many sports-based youth development (SBYD’s) organizations also seek to improve the academic prowess of children, most of the programmatic interventions are focused on the attitudinal approach about the importance of education.   PYB’s programs, whether through the school year, in summer camp, or even an MLK weekend, always include academic skill building and knowledge acquisition.  However, our pedagogical…

X’s and O’s from Kenny Holdsman – July July 31, 2016

As the Week 4 Camp of our Collegiate Summer Camp Series began at Temple University, I took a moment to reflect upon our participating young people and their PYB experience: It is 8 a.m. and young kids are pouring into Temple’s athletics center for PYB camp.  Some kids are walking solo or with a sibling from the subway.  Others are being dropped off by a mom, dad, grandparent, or guardian.  The returning campers are proudly wearing their mesh PYB reversible jerseys from…

X’s and O’s from Kenny Holdsman May 31, 2016

Today marks the 365th day of the beginning of Philadelphia Youth Basketball as a real live enterprise.  On June 1st 2015, I began my official tenure as PYB’s first employee.  The past 12 months have been the most exhilarating and productive of my “mid career” work life. The creation of a start-up organization, whether for-profit or non-profit, is something that I have become intimately familiar with during the past year.  The metaphor which our staff and board team often use is the…

X’s and O’s from Kenny Holdsman April 28, 2016

Almost twenty years ago, my wife Amy Tress Holdsman, joined the board of directors of Philabundance, a local hunger relief organization.  I remember vividly her reasoning for why she was compelled to the mission and function of this organization.  Amy said its work was basic and needed.  It brought excess food which otherwise would have gone bad to people who otherwise would have gone hungry.   This marriage of surplus food with hungry people clearly appealed to my wife’s attraction…
